Learning From Experience - Lahar Detection System

Development and Testing of AFM

The Acoustic Flow Monitor that will be used as part of the lahar detection system at Mount Rainier was inspired by the 1985 tragedy at Nevado del Ruiz. It was developed in 1989 at Mount Redoubt in Alaska and has been used at a number of volcanoes including Mt. Pinatubo where it successfully detected lahar flows (USGS).
